Until recently, plasma cutters were too expensive for DIY use. Over the last few years, mass production and new technology has not only made plasma cutters more affordable, but also lightweight, portable and higher efficiency. There are four ways to cut metal - by hand (very difficult and time consuming except for the thinnest of metals), using a powertool such as an angle grinder (very messy, noisy, smelly, hazardous and the sparks can cause damage to nearby objects), oxy-acetylene (expensive!) or using a plasma cutter (much less mess, much less noise, much less smell, much lower hazard, fewer and smaller sparks, much more versatile). There are some jobs which just can't be done without a plasma cutter - eg cutting out complex shapes or curves.
Grinders will remove 1/4" width of metal. A plasma cutter removes a hair's width - removing less metal takes less power and creates less hazardous dust and sparks. The only downside to using a plasma cutter is that the cutting line is so thin that it will show how steady your hand is!
Our plasma cutters require a supply of compressed air. Not a huge amount, and nothing fancy, as our plasma cutters come complete with a filter/regulator. This plasma cutter is capable of cutting through 16mm metal plate quickly and with ease. In fact, you can cut up to 22mm by running the torch slower over the metal, but the edges will not be as neat. This is sometimes known as a sever cut.
