This device will quickly test the power wiring of USB Ports on your Computer and let you know the following conditions:
- Polarity is correct/reversed
- Helps detect intermittent power problems
These days most desktop computer cases have USB ports on the front/back or side for user convenience. The problem is that these are manually wired to the motherboard, when the system is assembled. These connections don t have a keyed connector to prevent wiring it incorrectly. This increases the chances for mistakes (especially when the connections are in hard to reach areas), mistakes that can become very expensive.
These connections are: | 5Volt | - Data | + Data | GND |
The worst case is when the positive (5V) and the Ground (GND) wires are reversed. This will kill the device, you plug in, instantly.
In some cases it could damage the motherboard.

Just plug it in a USB port (with the computer turned ON)
- Red light - Warning polarity reversed (Do not use this port until the wiring is corrected)
- Green Light - Power Wiring OK
- Both Lights OFF - No Power (Check wiring / Motherboard)
Check for Intermittent power problems:
With the USBcheck connected to a powered USB port:
Gently wiggle the USBcheck device, from side to side and up and down motion, (If testing on a desktop case also wiggle the cables and the connector on the motherboard USB header). If the LED, at any time, flickers ON and OFF you have a bad power connection.
(NOTE: While performing this test do not apply too much force as it may cause damage to the solder joints holding the USB connector to the PCB board or the USBcheck device!!! )
Note: This device does not check the data communication of the USB port. First use the USBcheck* to test the power wiring. If you get the green light then plug-in a USB device or test equipment designed for that purpose (follow the manufacturer's instructions).
