This is a precision measuring instrument. I am amazed that it does not have any maker's name on it. The only markings on it are serial numbers.
The jaws can be set to the approximate desired position, the slide is then fixed in position by the furthermost upper knurled nut. The lower knurled nut then allows precise adjustment of the jaws before the second upper knurled nut is secured to maintain the required setting.
