Coca Cola Vendo 23 Standard for 1957
In the 1930's and early 1940's, Vendo had built a coin operated top that could be installed on Westinghouse chest machines to make them into a coin operated machine. In 1949 Vendo built that top into a full machine and so was born the Vendo 23 Coca Cola machine. The Vendo 23 was offered as a alternative to the much larger upright machines. You simply inserted 5 or 10 cents in the slot on the top, the coin mechanically allows you to turn the chrome ( orange squeezer looking ) knob, this action spins the top and retrieves 1 of the 23 bottles this machine holds. For this reason the Vendo 23 is referred to as the "Spin Top" This machine will only vend one selection and it will only hold the new 8 oz bottles. Having been manufactured for smaller locations, the Vendo 23 was seen everywhere from outside of general stores to gas stations. Vendo built around 40,000+ of these so, they are pretty common. The Vendo 23 is a really nice small machine that runs very quitely and will usually fit even in the smallest of places. For this reason I have seen them in kitchens or located behind a bar.
The Coca Cola Vendo 23 machine was manufactured from 1949 - 1959 and was offered in Standard and Deluxe. The Standard featured a painted silver top lid, embosed "Coca Cola" and a lower storage area for your empty bottles with a bi-fold hinge so, the tray stayed pretty level as you pulled the door open. Most Deluxe models also had the "ICE COLD" script at the bottom as well. The Standard came in solid red paint, had a "Coca Cola" decal on the front and a lower storage area for empty bottles with a one piece door so, the tray would tilt with the door as you pulled it open. The Standard usually had the "Vendo" script at the bottom instead of "ICE COLD" The early Vendo 23's had a handle on the lid you had to grab and spin with the top to rotate to the next bottle instead of the Chrome knob. The Chrome knob version is much easier to operate. Vendo hauled production on the Vendo 23 after the 1959 model year. I have seen the Vendo 23 offered in 1960's sales broucher from Vendo so, there must have been many still left over they were trying to sell off.
