Type 430 alloy is a low carbon ferritic stainless steel, which, in mildly corrosive environments or atmospheric exposures, have corrosion resistance approaching that of some nickel stainless steels. Type 430 alloy is oxidation resistant at elevated temperatures. Type 430 alloy is ductile, does not work harden readily, and can be formed using a variety of roll forming or mild stretch bending operations as well as the more common drawing and bending process.
These alloys are used in a variety of interior and exterior trim applications where corrosion resistance is more important than high strength. Typical applications are sinks and sink rims.
Other applications include: appliance trim, architectural decorative applications (interior) for bank vaults, safety deposit box doors, stair and cafeteria, railings, moldings, screens automotive trim or molding, builders hardware, counter tops, combustion chamber liners for diesel engines, combustion chambers, decorative trim, dishwashers, fasteners, gas burners on domestic heating units, gasoline powered automobile engines, gutters and downspouts, heaters, hinges, ice cream cabinet tops, kitchen equipment, kitchen trim, mufflers, nitric acid plant equipment, nitrogen fixation apparatus, oil burner parts, oil refinery equipment, press plates, pyrometer protection tubes, range hoods, recuperators, roofing and siding panels, restaurant equipment, rubber plant machinery, rubbish burners, scientific apparatus, soot blowers, stove tops, tanks, tobacco machinery, tubing and wire cloth and screens (industrial).
RESISTANCE TO CORROSION AND OXIDATION
Type 430 alloy is resistant to attack in a wide variety of corrosive media, and is most corrosion resistant when polished or rolled to a mirror like finish. Type 430 resists oxidation at temperatures up to 1600 F for intermittent service, and from 1450-1500 F for continuous service. The scale formed is tightly adherent and not easily shed during sudden temperature changes. Since the rate of oxidation is greatly affected by the atmosphere involved, by the heating and cooling cycles, and by the structural design, no actual data can be presented which would apply to all service conditions.
