Kafer is a German manufacturer of gages that is as ubiquitous in Europe as Mitutoyo or Starrett is here. The Kafer brand can be found in the auto and aerospace plants of Germany, Italy, and France.
The quality of manufacture and engineering of this instrument is what you would expect. For example if I roll the gage open and slip my finger off the roller the gage closing is cushioned which slows the acceleration so that the landing pads don't crash together. Kafer is no longer exporting inch instruments and finding one is becoming hard to do.
As an side I carry my 30 year old Starrett thickness gage in my pocket when ever I am in the machine shop. Lighter and less bulky than a micrometer and it can measure diameters too.
