Winner of the "stop-a-bullet" award at the reviewer's workshop was Symbol PPT 2700, a ruggedized Pocket PC with built-in barcode scanning and wireless LAN capability. Although the PPT 2700 is designed for specialized industrial use, it's a true Pocket PC and includes the built-in Pocket PC applications and utilities.
This is one rugged device, a member of Symbol's "Extreme Environments" category of products. According to Symbol, the PPT 2700 is sealed to IP54 standards for protection against windblown rain and dust, and can withstand multiple drops to concrete from up to 4.5 feet (1.37 meters).
The PPT 2700 is designed with a number of buttons and triggers positioned ergonomically on the device to allow one-handed operation in either hand. It's slightly bigger (7 x 3.5 x 1 in; 17.8 x 8.9 x 2.5 cm) and heavier (11.6 oz., 330 g) than the consumer Pocket PCs, but still quite portable. It has a high-capacity Lithium Ion battery that is part of the reason for the increased weight and size. It has 16 MB of RAM and 12 MB of flash ROM. The flash ROM means that the operating system and applications can be easily upgraded without having to swap out memory chips. Symbol offers a variety of peripherals and accessories for this device, including communications cradles, chargers, and an attachable Magnetic Strip Reader. They also include an application programming interface (API) to allow bar code data capture and wireless communication to be integrated into new or existing applications.
