6+ Pure Bred White Plymouth Rock
They say the West was won with Plymouth Rocks. According to the old-timers, these large, long-lived birds are the birds that kept the soldiers alive with their eggs and their meat.
Today, these birds are used by the poultry giants and hatcheries for the female side of the commercial broiler cross. The chickens you see at the grocery store most likely had a mother that was a White Plymouth Rock. The males average 9 1/2 pounds and the hens average 7 1/2 pounds.
The white Plymouth Rocks are pretty hard to come by if you are not a poultry giant. (I just happen to be connected :))) The white feathers make the dressed carcass more attractive than the darker feathers do.
Plymouth Rocks are the #1 brown egg layer of all the brown egg laying chicken breeds. Each hen averages about 200 large, light to medium brown, sometimes with touches of pink, eggs a year and will lay year round.
They are very cold hardy birds and will do well in the coldest of climates. They also do well in the Texas heat.
From my experience, these are the most hardy of all the birds. We have had quite a foray of predators around here and these guys have survived all would-be attackers without a mark. They can fly away from dogs and various other attackers if given ample room to escape. They are also docile, friendly, easily handled and make excellent pets.
Plymouth Rocks are one of the most popular dual-purpose backyard chickens. They are bred for their meat and their eggs and adapt well to free-ranging or confinement.
Our birds are relatively free ranged. They have over 1/2 acre, fenced-in for their own private use. No other animals are allowed in with them. Our rooster to hen ratio is 1:3. Eggs are very fertile.
