The FAST RMM remanent moment magnetometer measures remanent coercivity (Hcr), remanent moment (MrT) and remanent coercive squareness (S ) by recording and erasing long wavelength patterns on disk media. In this technique, the rotating disk is first exposed to a large erase field, purging any previously recorded patterns in the magnetic layer. Based on the radius being measured, the appropriate density is chosen and recorded on the disk using the recording magnet. The magnitude of the resulting signal is proportional to the remanent moment (MrT) of the media. On subsequent revolutions of the disk, progressively larger erase fields are applied by the recording magnet which drive the media towards a DC erased state. By observing the transfer curve of signal vs. erase field, both Hcr and remanent coercivity squareness (S ) can be determined. At a given radius, this technique measures all the recorded transitions on a radius simultaneously, with the number of data points being roughly equal to 1.6 times the radius given in mm. By multiple applications of field at a given level, the instrument is capable of measuring the time dependence of Hcr.
