I found this Mitutoyo Spherical Outside Micrometer in my inventor's machine shop & tucked it away - recognizing that it was another quality & precision-made measuring tool.
this micrometer is "especially useful in measuring
the wall thickness of small parts such as
sleeves, collars, tubings & various cylindrical workpieces.
It is also used to measure dimensions from inside of holes to outside edges.
The spherical anvil & spindle contact the inside curved surface
providing a Single point contact & thus permitting
accurate gaging of the wall thickness to .0001".
And, of course, like all Mitutoyo inspection micrometers, it
"meets or exceeds Federal Specifications for Accuracy".
While the micrometer is fully functional with smooth movement - like so many of my other Mitutoyo instruments, the foam in the case deteriorated and "ate" into the finish on one side of the micrometer. I have tried very hard to show pictures of the areas where there are pock marks & corrosion on the finish. I don't know if some of this will clean up or not - but the micrometer remains in beautiful working condition - & remains beautiful... on one side.
Also - I did my best to check the calibration with a Mitutoyo 1" Standard. The standard still has the protective plastic covering on both ends - but it appears accurate.
As you can see in the pictures, one side of the micrometer remains virtually "unscathed" by the deteriorated foam - while the other side did not fare as well.
This appears to be purely cosmetic - but this is my observation:
* one side of the thimbles' finish is pocked marked with corrosion (pic.s 8 & 10) - the other side remains fairly clean;
* the area where the sleeve & hammertone finish meet, shows some corrosion mostly on the hammertone finish (pic. # 11);
* also - in this same area - the back side of the housing for the counter - the hammertone finish shows some pock marks (pic. # 4);
* the 2 screws for the back black plate also show some corrosion (final picture)
* the black plates show some minor marks/scratches; and
Case: Aside from a few dings to the gold corners & edges, the outside of the case is excellent. The original label is bent & has a few dings - but also good. As noted, all of the soft, protective foam in the case deteriorated - so I removed it. The harder, form fitting foam remains in good condition.
Paperwork: Aside from a few wrinkles - in superb condition.
