INTEGRATED TRANSIENT VOLTAGE SURGE SUPPRESSOR
1. This section describes the materials and installation requirements for the TRANSIENT VOLTAGE SURGE SUPPRESSOR (TVSS) for the protection of all AC electrical circuits from the effects of lightning induced currents, substation switching transients and internally generated transients resulting from inductive and/or capacitive load switching.
A. ANSI/IEEE C62.41 - IEEE Guide for Surge Voltages in LowVoltage AC Power Circuits
B. ANSI/IEEE C62.45 - IEEE Guide for Surge SuppressorTesting
C. FIPS Pub 94 (1983) - Guide on Electrical Power for ADP Installation
D. National Electric Code - Article 285, 280-1, 2, 4, 12, 21, and 25
E. National Fire Protection Association - NFPA-20, NFPA-70, NFPA-75, and NFPA-780
F. UL 1283 - Electromagnetic Interference Filters
G. UL 1449 2nd Edition- Transient Voltage Surge Suppressors
1. TVSS shall be Listed and Component Recognized in accordance with UL 1449 2nd Edition, UL 1283, and cUL.
2. TVSS shall be UL 1449 2nd Edition tested and listed to 200kA Short Circuit Current Rating (SCCR) in compliance with NEC 285.6.TVSS devices obtaining
3. TVSS shall be installed internal to electrical distribution equipment by the electrical distribution equipment manufacturer.
4. TVSS shall be tested with the Category C3 high exposure waveform (20kV-1.2/50ms, 10kA-8/20ms) per ANSI/IEEE C62.41 - 1991
5. TVSS shall be a self contained module design. Each suppression element shall be MOV based. Each phase of the surge current diversion module shall be
protected using 200 kAIR, 30A surge rated fuses and thermal cutouts.
6. TVSS shall provide surge current diversion paths between each phase conductor and the neutral conductor, between each phase conductor and the ground
and between the neutral conductor and ground. For delta configured systems, the TVSS shall have components connected between each phase conductor
and between each phase conductor and ground.
7. TVSS shall incorporate copper bus bars for the surge current path. Small gauge round wiring or plug-in connections shall not be used in the path for surge
current diversion. Surge current diversion module shall be bolted directly to the bus bars of the distribution equipment for reliable low impedance connections
8. TVSS shall meet or exceed the following criteria:
a. Maximum surge current capability (single pulse rated) shall be ( 120kA ) ( 160kA ) (240kA) per phase.
b. Endurance Testing. Capable of protecting against and surviving 5000 ANSI/IEEE C62.41 Category C transients without failure
c. UL 1449 2nd Edition Listed and Recognized Component Suppression Voltage Ratings shall not exceed the following:
d. The ANSI/IEEE C62.41 - 1991 Category C3 let through voltages shall not exceed the following:
9. TVSS shall be designed to withstand a maximum continuous operating voltage (MCOV) of not less than 115% of nominal RMS voltage.
10. TVSS shall have a minimum EMI/RFI filtering of - 50dB at 100kHz
11.TVSS shall be equipped with on board visual and audible diagnostic monitoring. Indicator lights shall provide full time visual diagnostic monitoring of the
operational status of each phase of the surge current diversion module. An amber indicator light will indicate reduced suppression capability. A red indicator
light will indicate total loss of suppression capability. A green indicator light will indicate fully operational suppression capability. Audible diagnostic monitoring
shall be by way of audible alarm. This alarm shall activate upon a fault condition. An alarm on/off switch shall be provided to silence the alarm. An alarm push
to test switch shall be provided. The TVSS diagnostic monitoring devices shall be mounted on the front of the panelboard enclosure. The diagnostic monitoring
circuits shall continually monitor the operational status of the surge current diversion module. A diagnostic system press to test switch shall be provided. A
set of Form C dry contacts shall be provided for remote annunciation. No other test equipment shall be required forTVSS monitoring or testing before or
12. TVSS shall have a response time no greater than 1/2 nanosecond for any of the individual protection modes.
13. TVSS shall have a warranty for a period of five years, incorporating unlimited replacements of suppressor parts if they are destroyed by transients during the
warranty period.Warranty will be the responsibility of the electrical distribution equipment manufacturer.
14. TVSS shall be equipped with the following optional items:
a. Transient event surge counter shall be located on the front cover of the panelboard. The counter shall be equipped with a manual reset and a battery
to retain memory upon loss of AC power.
b. Remote monitor panel with indicating lights and audible alarm for mounting in a removed location.
1. The panelboard shall be UL 67 Listed and the TVSS device shall be UL 1449 2nd Edition Component Recognized. The TVSS device shall have passed all UL testing
required by the UL 1449 2nd Edition standard.
2. The unit shall be (top) or (bottom) feed according to requirements. A circuit directory shall be located inside the door.
3. The unit shall have removable interior.
4. The main bus shall be (copper) (aluminum) and rated for the load current required.
5. The unit shall include a 200% rated neutral assembly with copper neutral bus.
6. The unit shall be provided with a safety ground bus.
7. The field connections to the panelboard shall be (main lug) or (main breaker).
8. The unit shall be constructed with (flush) or (surface) mounted trim and shall be in a NEMA Type 1 enclosure.
1. TVSS s shall be supplied by Siemens Energy & Automation, Inc.,TPS series.
