HP 3560A Portable FFT Analyzer
For sale- a Hewlett Packard 3560A, a portable dual channel dynamic signal analyzer. I see the range, among other specs, listed as 31.5MHz to 40KHz. Full specs can be found here as a pdf file. The analyzer itself is in like new condition, a phrase that I rarely employ because of the high expectations it creates. In this particular case they would be justified. The thing looks like it just came out of the box. A smudge here, a scuff there at most.
Unfortunately the HP #1420-0504 battery pack was down for the count. It looks like 5 nicad D cells no doubt wired in series and covered in a heavy shrink wrap cover. The labeling on the cover says the nominal voltage is 6VDC. It was reading .14 when I tested it the first time, and I DO NOT have the HP charger that should go with it. So I improvised.
I took the battery pack out and carefully bared about on the positive and negative leads. I was careful not to cut any of the wires, the bare spots are staggered so that they cannot short, and I didn t cut all the way through the insulation so that it will retain some extra tensile strength. Then I cut the end off of a 6 VDC adaptor. With the battery pack removed from the analyzer I got it up to 5.55VDC, but it wasn t enough to power up the analyzer. Even after several days it was only up to 5.75, and that wasn t doing it either. So I broke out the big guns, an automotive battery charger with a 6 volt setting.
That ran it up to 6.85 in pretty short order, and in the short term at least it seemed to be holding that charge. That s the good news. The bad news was that the battery pack got pretty warm, so it apparently didn t like it too much. But it wasn t in the analyzer at the time, so no harm done in that respect. So you may end up having to replace the battery pack, my apologies. Definitely you will need an HP charger, I cannot recommend my automotive charger, and it is NOT included.
The only thing included other than the analyzer is the Quick Reference Guide as pictured, plus the custom HP padded carrying case. There is no other documentation, no manual, no software, no cables, and no sensors. It is untested other than poking around in the various menus. If you can suggest an easy test I will be happy to try it for you, but don t get carried away, this type of tester is at the fringe of what I normally deal with. I don t know what FFT stands for, so that should tell you where we stand. Serial number 3109A00690 if that tells you anything. The serial number label does not show any options installed.
