Hi, my name is Rogelio, i am from a coffee grower family, our family has been on the coffee business since very long time ago, we love coffee and we know about coffee.
It was on 1994, i was just 21 years old, it was right after the civil war, the family farm was abanded for more than 10 years, my father Americo was too old to start again, so he decide to get a chance for me....i took the chance!. All my journey begins on the 1994 it was pretty hard to start from zero, at the time coffee prices was very low in the NYSE, we was doing our best efforts in matter to keep our selfs up, i start planting new coffee trees since 1994 to 1998, in 4 years we have planted about 300,000 new coffee trees, all along that time coffee market grow for few years and prices was good, we get into some new investments doing new coffee fields, but the prices where good between that range, but the weather was terrible, we got too much water or non water, this makes the harvest a really problem, very hard to make the results match, on that time we use to keep about 30 people working on our farm, for the simple eye everything was going well, i was kind young and i guess i was a little bit reckless for my edge.
This change on 1998, NYSE coffee prices got down pretty bad, the weather hit us very bad also, lot of big farmers here in my country start having serious problems, even thought i keep my self confident for two more years, we keep ahead for the "extra mile", the coffee internation prices got lower than any in their history, large company got on bankruptcy our entire country was in bankruptcy by 1999, i don't know how but i keep my self working, in the worst time we did a lot of new coffee areas, hoping that market will get high again, that never happen, weather was a really issue, coffee harvest was very low too, i was very disappointed, over six years of work, all for nothing.....
It was on Oct 2001, i was watching the TV, and i realize that no more hope, no more projects, no more happiness, i didn't have a single penny in my pockets, what should i do??........
By October 2001, after giving a lot of time and work to one of my best projects in life, life put me right at the beginning, but it was worst, the only thing i was able to do is gone, by 2001 the entire coffee industry worldwide was totally in bankruptcy.
It was in the moment when i was watching the TV, that i get really sad, since nothing has left to do, stay sitting in my chair until things improve was not the plan, after been with no hope and sorrow, i decide to travel to the USA and make the difference, by August 24, i was on the plane, i got the ticket with borrowed money, and with $200 in my pocket, i got to the US, with new hopes, with new plans, all they different, with no knowledge to start......just hope!!.......
I get to Las Vegas for first time in my life, i use to visits the US very often when i was younger, my latest return was 16 years gap since my last visit, with NO English; it was true that $200 will no longer last too much, so i get to find a job, thank God i got a job three days after arrive to the US, to be honest the only task i have been doing in my entire life was as a General Manager of the farm, i have been grown giving work to other not getting one for my self, the first offer of work was as a helper in construction site, was so hard for me to learn, we use to work 10 hours or more with no weekends for $6.50/ hour, wow that was so hard!....
After 2 months, the construction site was closed, it was time to look for a new job!, by the time i was in Vegas i get to live in a small apartment with a lot of people i didn't know, they was kind different, from other country's, they got along with me very well, i use to sleep on the living room for awhile, but after few days i got a room!.......
The second job i got was washing buses, they airport shuttle, you may see them in Vegas, it was hard to start doing that at night in the winter time, i was just arrive to US, i was just getting use to the new weather, it was SO cold for me, we was a small washing grue, just a guy who was a ganger from California, i was never my boss or manager but he pretend to have authority over me, and he trys to be bold and trys to giving me orders, but he was not smart, i try to help him to make the job easy and well done, he never attempt, work was poor and he got fired, the two people crue was catted, not was just me for 35 busses!!....After my partner left i start doing the job at my way, and i learn two things in life:
-Is not the one who kill his self working in matter to get the job done well.
-Is not the problems out there the one s who affect you, are the problems you create against you the one who affect you.
(Maybe you want me to explain?, o.k, in the first sentence, in everything you do, do it, do it intelligent, do it easy, this apply to your work, to your life, like my partner from California on the shuttle company, he use to work three times more than usual with poor results, he thong to get well with the general manager because he "works" hard, the guy was doing alot of work, i agree with that, but he use to speak bad thing about other while he works, thats why he got fired, if you see this in other words or other examples, there are out there lot of people who do anything as possible to succeed in life, please who works a lot but they lost everything they make when they turn around the corner, i hope you got the idea, i did at my way, since then, i decide to not be the ones who loose)
You maybe asking your self where is the COFFEE part in this, o.k, i was asking all please i talk and offer them our coffee, i think that 90% of those people never get interested, and even people from my own country, they was the worst one, they never support at all, the only improvements on my life after about one year been working in the US ir was that i got more interested on the Internet and i was learning fast, after 12 months, the only improvements was, learning Internet + my own apartment.
The shuttle company finally close, i got lay off and i start looking for a job, i when about 3 months without a job, i apply several places, nothing, but after looking around i got a job on a retail store, it was the 99 Cents only store.
When i start working in that place i noticed that 60% of the employees was from my own country, work was kind rude, difficult to preform, but the worst part is to see your own people trying to push down others, they use to get well with me, but in many occasions i noticed that they try to push me down too, because they where on a higher position than me, i always to my best at work, i use to know what i good worker should do to be a good worker, so, i do my job like what i want my employee to do for me.
Regarding the coffee, i stop asking people about it, it was clear for me that most people don't like to drink coffee in Vegas, so i was lost, no ideas for about a year, just working on the store, i start working 6 days 10 to 12 hours everyday, it as hard work, never enough for them i guess.
After 5 year of hard work was time to left the 99 cent store, not complain about them, i did make many people i love and many people who was not too loved but they teach me a lot.
You may wonder what it was the thing i learn doing a labor work, well, i learn a lot, specially i learn about life, no matter what you are or where you cam from, if you are from America, South America, or Europe, this store was that busy that i knew people from the entire world, they was confident with me and they told me about their life's, i learn from them to treasure my life, to learn that difficult came to you to Polish you, no one is suffering a bad life my mistake, we suffer our own mistakes of course, but if they came we most learn from them.
