Sherline ER16 collet spindle adapter 4 mini mill /lathe


Custom made ER16 .Adapter set allows the Sherline operator to use the industry standard ER16 collets in either the Sherline mini/micro mill or lathe.
The Custom assembled set includes an ER16 to MT1 spindle adapter, a collet closer net, and a custom machined forged steel drawbar with a 303 stainless steel adapter bushing for the Sherline spindle and retainer "O" ring.
In developing this kit, I explored the expensive Sherline Industrial ER16 spindle and adapters sold by others that fasten to the 3/4x16 outside threads of the Sherline spindle. Having acquired a few and tested them from a Chinese manufacturer, I was not satisfied with the .003 + or - runout at the tip of a guaging drill rod at the point where an assembled end mill would be.
Soon, upon reviewing the Sheline techincal instructions on their end mill holder, I discovered how difficult it was to get an accurate adapter to fit on the outer threads of the spindle. In pertinent part, Sherline's Joe Martin states, as;
"A Note About the Cost of These End Mill Holders"
"Because the part is small and appears simple, its cost of $30.00 may cause some to question our pricing. The reason we must charge so much is because of the processes necessary to make the part. In order to provide the accuracy needed in a part of this type, the threaded hole and the end mill hole must be absolutely concentric. To accomplish this, approximately 10 boring, threading and drilling operations must be done on a very precise computer controlled lathe. To maintain concentricity, the threads cannot be tapped, but must be single pointed, which allows the part to run very accurately even though it is held on a threaded surface. The result is a strong, easy to use and highly accurate part where nothing less will do. Over the years we have put a lot of thought into keeping costs down and have found many places we could economize without sacrificing the accuracy of the product, but this was not one of them. To make this part using cheaper methods would reduce its usability and value to zero. If you want to use 3/8" (or other size) end mills, double ended cutters, or special cutters with the ease and accuracy of this system, you will find the cost of this part is money well spent in time saved."
So, the answer has to be the accurately machined Morse Taper Size MT1, which has a maximum runnout of .0005 inches, with the nominal being between .0002 and 0003 according to Sherline's own design tolerances.
So, after considering the outer thread adapter, I search and found several adapters that matched the .0005 maximum runout of the Sherline spindle. Unfortunately, they were precision German made brands costing $200 and more. Further searching led me to a German manufacturer who has eatablished a factory in Hong Kong using German machines and German management. So, I finally got something that made the adaption both economical and accurate.
Then, I designed a forged steel drawbar, 303 stainless steel bushing and an "O" ring retainer, to fit the Sherline spindle precisely. The unique thing about my drawbar is the 5/32" hex wrench socket embedded into it's head. That way, you will NOT need an extra "one use" wrench in your immediate tool kit. The standard 5/32" hex wrench supplied to tighten a lot of the screws on the Sherline will also tighten and release the drawbar.
The adapter meets the German DIN6499B 0.015MM (0.0006") specification for maximum runout Run-Out Tolerance. It is precision and finely ground of Hardened High Grade 1065 Carbon Steel. The closer nut is the 25mm standard which works very well with a standard 1 inch spindle wrench, just like the ER16 collet system sold for the Sherline spindle and on the Taig micro mill.
The adapter, when installed, is only about one inch longer than the Sherline end mill adapter, when installed. I currently use this adapter and drawbar on my own Sherline mill and prefer it over the Sherline end mill adapters.
This kit includes the German engineered and German standard precision adapter and a custom fabricated hex socket head drawbar and bushing both made stainess and forged steel in my own shop. NO MILL or ER16 collet, hex wrench or end mill is includes. I guarantee that this set is as described. There are, however, no returns accepted, unless the kit is truly defective.
