Japanese theater customs - 2007 wall calendar

Dating from the fourteenth century, Japanese Noh theater is the oldest form of stage play still in existence. Originating in the folk traditions of acting, song, and dance, it evolved into a highly stylized theatrical form marked by a small cast, little or no stage scenery, few props, and elaborate masks and costumes. The productions peaked in grandeur during Japan s Edo period (1603-1867), when the costumes became marvels of exquisite designs in silk. Here are twelve outstanding examples of Edo-period Noh theater costumes from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
