I took a closer look at the unit and realized that replacing the glass with Lexan or acrylic would be trivial - it comes apart with 6 bolts and a new flat window could be cut on a bandsaw and bonded in place. I was about to do exactly that, since I wanted to build a mounting fixture for it anyway, but then decided to forget the traditional flowmeter entirely and go with a vane-type unit that uses a tiny turbine to generate about 5,000 pulses per gallon... letting a microprocessor handle the display. That's more my geek style anyway.
